interactive book
Creating the interactive children’s story Pickles and Peanut by Kasey Leftwich.
-
In my Graphic Design course at Daytona State College, I was assigned to create an interactive book that was at least 6 pages in length. Using Adobe InDesign and the interactivity features there, I had to create something worth being interactive.
-
Using Office Word, I wrote the story of Pickles and Peanut and their awesome adventure to save Chester, the puppy. I then used Procreate on my iPad Pro and Apple Pencil to illustrate the book.
After I had the content for the book, I used InDesign to layout the book and started adding interactivity to the project within InDesign itself. I also included some animations from Procreate however.

The hardcover copies are available in the shop now! Click here to view the Pickles and Peanut Children’s Story in the store.
I used InDesign once again and deleted all the interactivity since it would not print. I had to fix some spaces that were now empty or looked odd without the interactivity and once I did a draft print and fixed the misprint issues, I was able to order enough to put in the shop! Grab one for your family!
I didn’t only want to finish my assignment and make a simple interactive book to get a decent grade and pass. I wanted to use this as an opportunity to create something I’ve been wanting to create since I was a child. I used to strive to be an author as a kid. I wrote my own books since I was around 7 years old. (Granted, they probably weren’t very good).
Creating the Illustrations in Procreate:
Procreate is an amazing app. The price for the quality is very astounding. I love to use this app for illustrations as such with a lot of detail and thought. My Apple pencil makes this process very enjoyable. I wanted to use very deep autumn colors, intense contrast, and warmth.
